IMG_5072.jpg. Photocopy of a photograph of a historically significant Harvey
area quilt. A fire at Christmas in 1895 destroyed St. Andrews Presebyterian
Church, Harvey Station, York Co., N.B. In early 1896 a young matron in the
congregation, Mrs. Alexander Briggs, gathered some women together for the
purpose of selling quilt blocks to raise money for a new church. They would
inscribe patrons names and donations on each block if so desired. They
pieced and quilted the quilt and it was subsequently sold at the church
picnic to Mrs. W.W.E. Smith, of Harvey Station. The total amount subscribed
for the quilt was $7,215.00 with pledged amounts ranging from $10-40.00.
Many years later, (1940) Mrs. Smith gave it to the quilter¹s granddaughter,
Margaret Coffey Dougan, daughter of J. Lorne Coffey and Annie Briggs Coffey,
as a wedding present. Margaret Coffey Dougan (wife of Dr. Dougan) eventually
gave the quilt to Ethel Godfrey, who is also a grand daughter of Mrs.
Alexander Briggs (nee Margaret Jane Nesbitt) 1846-1906. Photograh taken by
Helen Craig in June 1993 when she visited the present owner, Ethel Godfrey
in Victoria, B.C. A detailed account of those making donations to the
rebuilding of the church is found in the documents section. Image courtesy
