35. Oswald Walter Gass . Son of Thomas "Marshall" Gass & Elizabeth "Lizzie" Brown. Born 10 Dec 1908 in York Mills. Died 5 Apr 1990 in Saint John Regional Hospital. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Carman, CPRail. Religion Presbyterian.

 

       From The Telegraph Journal, 7 Apr 1990:

    Oswald Gass

    The death of Oswald Walter Gass of 732 Chapel Street, Saint John West, husband of Elizabeth (Swan) Gass occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday.

 

    Born in York Mills, York County, he was a son of the late Marshall and Elizabeth (Brown) Gass.

    He had been employed with CPRail for approximately 31 years retiring in 1972.   At the time of his retirement he was employed as a carman.   He has been a resident of Saint John for the past 47 years, a member of Blair Lodge No. 242 CPRail, and a member of St. Columba Presbyterian Church.  

 

    He was predeceased by six brothers and two sisters.

    Besides his wife, he is survived by: one daughter Hughleen (Mrs Douglas Long) of Saint John West; one sister, Mrs Emma Lister of Kentville, N.S.; one sister-in-law, Mrs Ward Gass (Bunnie) of McAdam; two granddaughters, Judy McLaughlin of Willow Grove and Susan Long of Saint John West, several nieces and nephews.

 

    The body is resting at the Castle Funeral Home (Fallsview), 309 Lancaster Avenue, from where the funeral will be held on Sunday with service at 2 p.m.   Interment will take place in the Harvey Community Cemetery later in the spring.   Visiting hours at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

 

     He married Sarah "Elizabeth" Swan, daughter of Edmond Stephen Swan & Elizabeth Ethel "Bessie" Messer, 27 Dec 1933 in Knox Presbyterian Church Records, Harvey. Born 25 Jul 1912 in Tweedside, York Co., NB. Died 24 Feb 1999 in Saint John Regional Hospital. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

 

    Oswald and Elizabeth lived in Saint John and had one daughter.

    GASS, Elizabeth S.

    At the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 24, 1999, Elizabeth S. Gass of 732 Chapel Street West, wife of the late Oswald Gass.   Born in Tweedside, York County, she was the daughter of the late Edmund and Elizabeth (Bessie) (Messer) Swan.   Mrs Gass was a member of St. Columba Presbyterian Church.   She is survived by one daughter, Hughleen Long of Saint John West; one brother, William Messer and his wife Doris of Harvey Station; one sister, Jessie Lister of Harvey Station; two granddaughters, Susan and Judy McLaughlin and her husband Norman; one great granddaughter, Meagan; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

    Resting at "Fallsview" Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Avenue (634-1701).   Funeral service will be held at "Fallsview" Chapen on Friday, February 26, 1999 at 1 pm.   Interment in Harvey Cemetery in the spring.   Visiting at "Fallsview" on Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm.   Following the service, a reception will take place at the "Fallsview" Family Reception Center.
