Brian Swan Family Album

Return to Photo Album Index Page

Photographs presented here were copied from the collection of Brian Swan of La Peche, Quebec, which includes Cornelius settler John Stuart Thompson, the first school teacher in Harvey Settlement. Brian inherited the photo album below from his grandmother Ella Jessie Swan (née Thompson) who provided the image identification. Most photographs in this collection are tin types and were taken in the latter part of the 19th century. The collection is valuable in that it not only includes photographs of a broad spectrum of Harvey settlers, but that the subjects in every single photograph are identified.

Images were provided courtesy of Brian Swan and copied by Tim Patterson 9 June 2008. Additional information on any persons illustrated, would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Tim Patterson at: tim.patterson@carleton.ca.

3699. Tin type image of Henry Thompson (b. 1841/1842, Harvey Settlement.

KJ Swan Hall wrote (1 Mar 2009): From the Swan Book (page 3): "Henry is reputed to have gone to the Black Hills of North Dakota, to have become an Indian scout, to have been a personal friend of Buffalo Bill, and to haave been killed by the Indians." This story was passed down through the Thompson family, but we have been unable to confirm it. Thompson family descendants in Maine tried to track down details, but they were unable to get any confirmation to verify the story. It was Thompson family knowledge that Henry had written letters to his relatives about his adventures, but the family didn't think anyone would believe the stories and destroyed the letters. (Again, family folklore which I only heard when I was involved in researching the Swan family.)
