36. Peter Cowe. Son of David Cowe & Eleanor Turnbull. Born 1863.

Notes from Fred Kennington, Dec 2007: " Peter Cowe is still a bit of a mystery. As a child the family lived near Ford and he attended Ford School. Lady Louisa Marchioness of Waterford, lived at Ford Castle. She was an accomplished artist who painted religious murals on the interior walls of the school, using local people as models. The identity of some of them is known. Peter was said to be one of them but there is no record. Family legend said that Lady Waterford spotted Peter's artistic talent and sent him to a London art school. He was said to have worked as an artist on 'Punch' and that he was an official war artist for the Boer War. I have not been able to confirm any of that. The only possible reference I can find to Peter comes from the 1891 census when Peter Cowe, born Scotland, with his wife and child were living in Stoke Newington, London. His occupation was Bullion Broker's Clerk. He has not been found in the 1901 census. If this is 'our' Peter he could have had art training in London but would presumably need a job. Working in a Bullion Broker's office he may well have been sent out to South Africa. I would love to solve the mystery of Peter. The records of Ford & Etal Estate do not refer to him."
