22. John Alexander Hay . Son of Alexander Hay Jr. & Susanna Nesbitt. Born 7 Nov 1848 in Harvey. Christen 24 Dec 1848 in Harvey By Rev. Daniel McCurdy. Died 10 Mar 1937 in Saint John. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer. Religion Presbyterian.

    In 1901 Census for Manners Sutton, John Hay had 150 acres, a 5-room house, 4 barns, and the family was living adjacent to Isaac and Nancy Burrell.

    He married Elizabeth Burrell, daughter of Robert Burrell & Ann Piercy, 9 Oct 1874 in St. Paul's, Fredericton, By Rev. John M. Brooke . Born 20 Jun 1852 in Harvey. Christen 16 Aug 1852 in St. Paul's Church Records. Died 21 Jun 1934 in West Saint John. Buried 23 Jun 1934 in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Religion Presbyterian.

    Witnesses to marriage were Alexander Hay and Frances Hay.

    When Elizabeth died in 1934, she was survived by   her husband, and   four daughters:   Mrs Harry Watters, Fairville; Mrs W. G. Humble, Vancouver; Mrs G. M. McCutcheon, Boston; Mrs George Swan, Brownville, Me.; one son, Albert Hay, West Saint John.

    In the 1901 Census, Elizabeth's birth date is given as:   8 Sep 1852.

    Late Mrs John Hay

    Harvey Station, June 27 -- The body of the late Mrs John Hay was brought from Saint John for burial on Saturday, June 23rd.

    The funeral service was held in the Presbyterian Church at two o'clock and conducted by Rev. George E. Knight.   The choir sang Peace Perfect Peace, Asleep in Jesus and Abide With Me.

    The church was filled with relatives and friends who came to pay their last respects to one who by her kindly quiet and sympathetic way won her a host of friends among the young as well as older people.   She was always interested in any good work and ever ready to lend a helping hand where needed.   Mrs Hay lived in Harvey all her life until about five years ago, when she moved to Saint John.   She was a life long member of the Presbyterian Church.   There was a large number of beautiful floral pieces from friends in Saint John and Harvey.   The pall bearers were John Calvin, Pearly Watters, Wesley Hay, Albert Messer, Hazen Burrell, Colby Brown.   Service at the grave also by Mr McKnight.

    They had the following children:

23. Jessie Levina Hay . Daughter of John "Jack" Hay & Margaret. Born 1855. Died 1930. Buried in St Stephen Rural Cemetery.

    She first married George Maxwell, 21 Aug 1872 in Charlotte Co., NB. Born in St. Stephen, NB.

    From Charlotte Co. Marriages 1854-89, p. 360, RS148, film #15477:   "This will certify that this twenty-first day of August eighteen hundred and seventy two George Maxwell of St. Stephen and Jessie L. Hays of Harvey Settlement, York Co. were duly married Licence 3454 according to ritual of Methodist Church John A. Clark Minister officiating signatures of parties married George Maxwell and Jessie L. Hays, witnesses William Robinson and Rebecca L. Robinson.   Recd and regtd Nov 29, 1872."

    She second married Franklin A. "Frank" Mehan. Born 1855. Died 1912. Buried in St Stephen Rural Cemetery.

    Jessie and Frank Mehan lived in St. Stephen.

24. Robert Andrew Hay . Son of John "Jack" Hay & Margaret. Born Approx 1856 in Harvey. Died 24 Dec 1893. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Factory Hand. Religion Presbyterian.

    In the 1861 Census, Robert was 4 years old and his sister Jessie Levina was 6 years old, therefore he perhaps was born approx. 1856.   However, the date of his birth on the gravestone in the Harvey Settlement Cemetery is 1854.

    He married Mary H. Wilkin, daughter of Herbert Wilkin & Jane Gass, 4 Nov 1884 in St. Paul's Church, Fredericton By Rev. A. J. Mowatt. Born 20 Feb 1860 in Harvey. Died 15 Feb 1952 in McAdam. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

    Witnesses to marriage were Nicholas D. Lister and Margaret Wilkins.

    McAdam--The death of Mrs Mary Hay, age 92, occurred at her home in McAdam.   Her health had been failing for sometime, but she was up each day to within a few days of her death.   She was one of McAdam's oldest and most respected residents.

    Mrs Hay was born at Harvey and came to McAdam to live about 50 years ago.   She was a member of St. Paul's United Church, a quiet person of retiring disposition, but very kind, charitible and very hospitable.   Her interests centred in her home and family.

    She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Hay, and is survived by one son, Earl Hay, and one daughter, Gertrude Hay, both of McAdam.   A second son, Frank, predeceased her; one sister, Mrs Fred Embleton, McAdam and one brother, James Wilkin, Harvey also survive, and six grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

     Burial was at Harvey.

25. Margaret Jane "Jennie" Hay . Daughter of John "Jack" Hay & Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dorcas. Born 5 Feb 1867 in Harvey Sta., York Co., NB. Christen in Harvey Presbyterian Church. Died 26 Nov 1946. Buried in St. Stephen Rural Cemetery.

    She married Allen E. Bartlett, son of Amos Hitchings Bartlett & Ann C. Connick, 28 Jul 1886 in Presbyterian Manse, St. Stephen. Born 1865 in Bartlett Mills, Charlotte Co., NB. Died 13 Oct 1948 in NB. Buried in St. Stephen Rural Cemetery. Occupation Railway Engineer.

    They had the following children:

27. Mary Isabella "Bella" Hay . Daughter of John "Jack" Hay & Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dorcas. Born 11 Nov 1869 in Harvey. Died 17 Nov 1909 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

    She married Robert Moffitt, son of Andrew Moffitt & Margaret "Jane" Piercy, 5 Oct 1887 in York Co., NB By J. A. McLean, Presbyterian . Born 4 Apr 1865 in Harvey, York Co, NB. Died 31 Jan 1930. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer.

 

    Witnesses to marriage were John Messer and Maggie Moffatt.

    Twins born and died 17 Nov, 1909, when Isabella also died after giving birth to them, at the age of forty years.
