186. Lila May Little. Daughter of David "Allan" Little & Margaret Ann Lister (link to Lister family pages). Born 28 Oct 1894 in Harvey. Died 26 Nov 1986 in DECH, Fredericton. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Religion United Church.

From The Daily Gleaner, 4 Dec 1984:

    Harvey Woman Turns 90

Lila Coburn, life-long resident of Harvey and better known as Gram or Aunt Lila, recently celebrated her 90th birthday with a family dinner for about 65 people at the St. Andrews United Church hall.  Over 150 people greeted her on her special day, and she received many delightful and useful gifts.

Born in 1894 on a farm in a place known as Little Settlement, Lila had one sister and three brothers.  After living at home for 16 years she went to work in G. W. Coburn's store for six years.

One of the special moments in her childhood she recalls is the Christmas when she was nine years old, two years after her father had died.  Times were lean and there wouldn't be any gifts, so she thought.  However, her mother had sent one of her brothers to the store and that year Lila received a china cup and saucer, which she cherished for many years.

In 1916, Lila married Roy Coburn who was also a farmer.  They raised six children--Althea Jones and Margaret Wood now residing in Harvey and Shirley Mersereau of Fredericton, James and Arnold of Harvey and Guy of Peterborough, Ont.  She had 20 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Lila says the secret of her longevity is hard work--most of her life being spent on a farm.

She has had two trips to Vancouver during her 90 years by train--once before she was married and again in 1965 to visit her brother who died shortly after her second visit.

Although partially blind Lila says with patience and perseverance she completes several projects in needlework.  In the past year she has made over 40 cushions most with patchwork tops which she gives for gifts or to church groups for sales.  She is still an active member of the UCW and the church, and is able to visit with her friends.

From The Daily Gleaner, 9 Dec 1986:
