198. Norman Ebenezer Whitford. Son of Leonard Whitford & Margaret "Emma" Darling Little. Born 12 Oct 1894 in Walla Walla, Wash. Died 19 Oct 1971 in Rose Valley, Sask. Buried in Rose Valley Cemetery. Occupation Teacher, Farmer. Religion United Church.

    Norman was raised by his grandmother Little and aunt Mary Briggs in Harvey from a young age.  He graduated from Provincial Normal School in 1913 and the same year went to Saskatchewan where he taught in several schools.  He began homesteading land in Rose Valley in 1917 and continued to teach until the early 1930s when he started farming full time.  He was a trustee for the Robbinsdale School and a director for the first co-op store in Rose Valley, and he also worked with the 4-H club.  (The book, "A Tribute to Our Pioneers", published by the Rose Valley and District Historical Society, Rose Valley, Saskatchewan, printed by Turner-Warwick Printers Inc., North Battleford, Sask., 1981, has a section on Norman and Kjerlaug Whitford -- page 619.)

    NORMAN E. WHITFORD, 77 YEARS, BURIED

    Funeral service was held October 22 in the Lutheran Church at Rose Valley for Norman Ebenezer Whitford, 77, of Rose Valley whose passing occurred October 19, 1971, at the hospital there following a short illness.

    Norman Whitford was born in Walla Walla, Washington, USA, on October 12, 1894.  At the age of four he came with his parents to live in Canada and received his education in New Brunswick and later in Saskatoon.  His profession was teaching but he later settled on a farm.  He came west to the Rose Valley district in 1917 and three years later, October 9, 1920, he married Kjerlaug Skogstad at Rose Valley.  Mrs Whitford survives her husband.

    A family of three sons and a daughter was born of the union, Ivar is of Brandon, Man.; Cyrus and Marvin of Rose Valley; and Mrs Norma Wagner of Calgary.  One son, Norman, predeceased him, as an infant, in 1928.  He was also predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

    During his earlier years in the Rose Valley area Mr Whitford was an active worker in the community, serving as a school trustee in Robbinsdale School and working with 4-H clubs.  He was a member of the United Church.

    Rev. Gen Grant, pastor of Rose Valley LutheranChurch, officiated at the burial service.  Soloist Allan Kvemshagen sang "Does Jesus Care?"  Honorary pallbearers were Frank Polchak, Sam Pressacco, Rollo Pugh, Warren Rotzein, Ross Chaykowski and Stanley Kopanko.  Pallbearers were Philip Berge, Napoleon Pressacco, Douglas Pugh, Nick Weilgosz, Allan Connell and John Brown.  Interment was in the Rose Valley cemetery.

 

    He married Kjerlaug Skogstad, 9 Oct 1920 in Rose Valley, Sask. Born 1 Nov 1900 in Bordu, Norway. Died 14 May 1990 in Rose Valley, Sask. Buried in Rose Valley Cemetery.

    Daughter of Olaf Skogstad, who first immigrated to USA, then came to Canada in 1911.
