26. Matthew Little. Son of John Little & Janet Heughan (link to Heughan family pages). Born 1818 in Scotland. Died 20 Apr 1889 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer.

 

    Matthew was one of the four Little brothers who first settled on land in the area now known as Coburn but commonly referred to as Little Settlement.  He and his wife Isabella were farmers, and in the 1861 Census, Matthew was 40 years of age, a farmer, and Universalist.  Isabella was 29 years, and Presbyterian.  They had six children ranging in age from 8 years to one month in age.  Four servants were living in their household:  Margaret Jane Cockburn, age 16; John Edmunds, age 22; Robert Martin, age 30; and George Phelps, age 15.

    In 1861, they employed 5 males and 2 females.  Owned or occupied 100 acres improved land and l00 acres unimproved.  Cash value of farm was 300 pounds, value of implements and machinery, 20 pounds.  They had 2 horses, 6 milch cows, 2 working oxen, 9 other neat cattle, 19 sheep, 3 swine, and slaughtered 450 lb. pork.  They produced 300 lb. butter, 60 lb. wool, 15 tons of hay, 400 bu. oats, 100 bu. buckwheat, 20 bu. timothy, and 60 bu. potatoes.

    The Census of 1891 had Isabella, age 58 years, widowed, with children Charley, age 18, and Celia, age 16, and granddaughter Cora, age 7, living with her.

    Matthew was quite active in land dealings.  Brother Robert relinquished 50 acres to Matthew, half lot adjoining north of William, third tier, west side, which would be one of the Land Grants.  (RS108 F4221 (1840) PANB)

    On 29 Dec 1854, Matthew purchased from John Simonds, 120 acres, part of grant of land from the Crown to the late Honourable Richard Simonds, father of John Simonds.  Deed executed 10 Oct 1860 (F5632 V. 41 P. 504 PANB)

    On 4 Nov 1870, Matthew and brother John acquired from George Lister for $1,000,  10 acres of land together with all buildings, clapboard machine, shingle machine, up and down saw, trimmers, belting, etc. (2/3 to Matthew, 1/3 to John).  "Beginning at a pine stump standing on the south side of road between Lister's Saw Mill and James Kinnea's house, running south ten chains to a fir tree, thence west seventeen chains to a stake on the eastern bank of the North East Stream, then making stream the boundary to a stake on the west bank of said stream below said Mill running north twenty-eight degrees west, three chains and twenty-five links to a stake, thence north fifteen degrees east 15 chains to a pine stub thence north 75 degrees east 11 chains to a stake"....etc. etc.  (F5637 V. 52 p. 432 PANB)

    From New Brunswick Reporter, 20 Oct 1848:  "Married 25th ult., by Rev. D. McCurdy, Matthew Little and Miss Isabella Hay, both of Harvey Settlement."

    From York Co NB Marriage Register B 1837-1850 (PANB):  Witnesses to marriage were Alex Hay and William Hay.

    In the name of God Amen, I, Mathew Little of the Parish of Manners Sutton in the County of York and Province of New Brunswick, Farmer, Being of sound mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and commend my soul unto the hand of Almighty God who gave it, and my Body I commend to the earth to be buried in decent burial at the discretion of my executors nothing doubting but at the General resurrection I shall beceive the same again by the Almighty power of God, and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form:  1st. - I will my beloved wife Isabella all my real estate consisting of my Homestead Farm known as the Mathew Little Homestead marked C & N, also the 50 acres being west half of the James Little Homestead marked B, all in the Little Settlement Manners Sutton with all my personal property consisting of Stock, Implements and everything belonging and on said farms.  2nd - I also will to my wife Isabella one thousand dollars out of my personal funds in her charge.  3rd - I will my grandchildren Mable Alberta Embleton, Clodus Elden Embleton, Levina Elizabeth Embleton and Cora Levina Little each seventy five dollars to be paid when they become of age.  4th - I will my sons Robert, Alexander, John Albert, Amos and Charles and my daughters Emily Robinson and Vercelia Victoria Little the remaining balance equally divided among them as far as the money will go.  5th - I will my son Charles and daughter Vercelia Victoria Little receive their portion on coming of age.  6th - I will that Robert Little, Alexander Little, John Albert Little and Amos Little be my executors and see it fulfilled in all its details.

    And I hereby utterly disallow revoke disannull all and every other formal Testaments, Wills, Legacies, Bequests and executors by me in any wise before named, Willed and bequeathed, Ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament.  In Witness Whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal and declare this to be my last will and testament in the presence of witnesses named below this ninth day of March A.D. 1889.

    He married Isabella Hay (link to Hay family pages), daughter of Alexander Hay (link to Hay family pages) & Jane Robinson (link to Hay family pages), 25 Sep 1848 in Harvey By Rev. Daniel McCurdy. Born 1833 in England. Died 21 Sep 1896 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

 

    Unsure of correct spelling of first name:  Isabel or Isabella.

    Isabella came to NB as a young child with her parents and siblings in 1837 with the pioneer settlers of Harvey Settlement.

    Isabella and Matthew Little were married by Rev. Daniel McCurdy on the 25th day of September 1848.  Witnesses were Alex Hay and William Hay.

    Isabella and Matthew had ten children.

 

    They had the following children:
