55. Mary Elizabeth Little. Daughter of David Little & Margaret Ann Herbert (link to Herbert family pages). Born 8 Feb 1856 in Harvey Settlement. Christen 1 Jun 1856 in Harvey Presbyterian Church. Died 23 Jan 1913 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

She married Matthew Briggs (link to Briggs family pages), son of Thomas Briggs (link to Briggs family pages) & Margaret Darling (link to Briggs family pages), 15 Sep 1880 in York Co., NB By Rev. A. J. Mowatt. Born Approx 1858 in Harvey. Died 28 Jul 1939 in Hennepin, Minnesota.

From Weekly Telegraph, 22 Sep 1880: "Married 15th inst., by Rev. A. J. Mowatt, assisted by Rev. Joseph Barker of Sheffield, Matthew Briggs of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Mary Little, third daughter of David Little, Esq. of Manners Sutton, York Co."

Witnesses to marriage were A. Lawson and Robert Ballentine.

At the time of their marriage in 1880, Matthew's home was listed as Minneapolis, Minnesota, and they lived in Minnesota for a number of years, however Mary returned to Harvey about 22 years prior to her death (see below).

From newspaper article in the New Brunswick Reporter and Fredericton Advertiser, August 12, 1896. As transcribed in Daniel F. Johnson's New Brunswick Newspaper Vital Statistics: Volume 102 Number 23. Contributed by Sheila Lafferty, 28 January, 2014.

Mrs. Mary BRIGGS, who is now living with her mother at Harvey Station (York Co.), was surprised last week by a call from Deputy Sheriff HAWTHORNE who served her with a divorce writ at the instance of her husband, Matthew BRIGGS, now in Hennepen Co., Minnesota. They were married in 1883 and about five years ago Mrs. Briggs came home and has since lived with her mother and has been in constant communication with her husband, from whom she received money no later that the present winter. The writ was issued by a Minneapolis firm and the only cause for divorce charged is alleged desertion on the part of the wife.

From newspaper obituary in The Daily Gleaner, 27 Jan 1913:

    Mrs Mary E. Briggs

Harvey Station, Jan 24 -- Mrs Mary E. Briggs died at her home here yesterday morning after a brief illness.  She was a daughter of the late David Little of Harvey Settlement, and of Mrs Margaret Little, whose death occurred in the same house only a fortnight ago.  Her early years were spent at Little Settlement.  She afterwards resided for some time in Minnesota, but for the last twenty years or more she has resided with her mother here.  She was possessed of many good qualities and had a wide circle of friends who will regret to hear of her death.

She is survived by one son, Cyrus D. Briggs, who arrived from Minneapolis just in  time to see his mother die.  She is also survived by two brothers, Messrs. Thomas and Eben Little, of Coburn, and one sister, Mrs W. W. E. Smith, of this place.

Matthew appears twice in the 1880 Census for Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota--in the households of his brothers John and James.  In one he is listed as a carpenter, in the other, a labourer.

Matthew was 72 years of age and living in Minnesota in the 1930 US Census.

(From Generations, The Journal of the New Brunswick Genealogical Society, Fall 2003, page 7:  "New Brunswicker's in the 1930 US Census", contributed by Marlene Lawrence, 30 Cross St. Unit 2, Petitcodiac, NB:

Minnesota -- Briggs, Matthew, age 72, County - Hennepin, Township - Minneapolis, Roll # T626-1089, Page 28A.)

From 1930 United States Federal Census, Mathew Briggs was living in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota, 72 years old, born in New Brunswick; his wife Nettie Briggs was 67 years old, and also living in the household was Margaret I. Briggs, 29 years old.  (Source:  Year: 1930, Census Place:  Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnestora; Roll: 1089; Page: 28A; Enumeration District: 20; Image: 779.0.)

Matthew died in Hennepin, 28 Jul 1939.  (Minnesota Death Index, 1908-2002)

(Name is spelled both Mathew and Matthew in various records.)

    They had the following child:

179 i. Cyrus David Briggs
