Copied from Nanaimo Free Press, 7 Nov 1895:

Unexpected Death of Mrs J. W. Coburn

The news of the death of Mrs J. W. Coburn, totally unexpected as it was, came as a severe shock, not only to the bereaved husband, but to a large circle of friends in this city.

As stated in yesterday's issue, Mrs Coburn underwent an operation in Jubilee Hospital, at the hands of Dr Jones of Victoria and Dr. McLeod of Nanaimo, and Mr Coburn had been notified that the patient was progressing favourably.

That death would so soon result was altogether unexpected, no less by Mr Coburn than the doctors themselves; otherwise he would never have left her side.  She began to decline rapidly, however, soon after the first telegram had been sent, and Mr Coburn received another wire requesting his presence without delay.

He left by a special train almost immediately, but arrived too late; his wife breathed her last about 4 o'clock in the afternoon.  The remains were conveyed to Nanaimo by todays train and now lie at the family residence on Wallace Street.

Deceased was born at Harvey, New Brunswick, and was 34 years of age.  Some two years ago she paid a visit to her relatives in the east, and in the course of the return journey was taken ill with typhoid fever and spent nine months in the hospital at Kamloops.  Ever since that date she has been in more or less failing health, and her system was considerably weakened in consequence.

Mr Coburn feels the loss keenly, but cannot fail to appreciate the genuine manifestation of sympathy which has been evoked by his misfortune.  The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock.

She married John Wood Coburn (link to Coburn family pages), son of Andrew Wood Cockburn (Coburn) (link to Coburn family pages) & Elizabeth Messer (link to Messer family pages), 13 Dec 1882 in York Co., NB By Robert Nairn, Presbyterian. Born 30 Aug 1859 in Harvey. Christen 30 Oct 1859 in Harvey Presbyterian Church. Died 13 May 1939 in Vancouver, BC. Occupation Lumberman.

Witnesses to marriage were Ebenezer Little and Ellen Coburn.

John and his first wife, Eleanor "Ellen" Christina Little, and family moved to Vancouver Island, BC, approximately 1885, and they had two daughters.    He was a lumberman, and after Ellen's death he married Ellen Cowie in 1899 in Victoria, BC.  From his second marriage he had two sons and a daughter.

In 1901 Census, for Victoria, BC, John was living in Victoria and his occupation was listed as Railroad, passenger con.

From "The Herald", 14 Oct 1893:  "John Coburn, of Victoria, BC, is here on a visit to his many friends and relatives.  Mr Coburn formerly resided here, but left about 8 years ago, and he now holds a lucrative position on the Vancouver Island Railway."  (As reported in The Herald, John and family visited Harvey in 1893.)

From "Nanaimo, The Story of a City", published by Nanaimo and District Museum Society, 100 Cameron Road, Nanaimo, British Columbia, 1983.  Page 16:  "John Coburn, a well-known logger, operated a sawmill at Cassidy in the early 1900's.  In 1908 he opened a new logging operation known as the New Ladysmith Lumber Company in East Wellington.  His railway covered a total of 12.00 miles with two locomotives and five logging cars.  The logs were hauled from Mount Benson to the mill at East Wellington where lumber was sawn.  The lumber was then loaded on to railway cars to be transported to Brechin Point Rail Siding.  A widely known and colorful engineer on this operation was Charlie Snowdon, nicknamed "Broom Handle Charlie".  He ran the first "lokey" on Vancouver Island.  In 1926, the business was sold to Nanaimo Lumber Company and the mill was relocated at Quarterway."

(Information from Annabel Cowie to Kenneth L. Coburn -- The BC Archives in Victoria has John Wood Coburn's diaries and papers, which are most interesting.  It is not possible to remove them from the Archives so you must travel to Victoria to look at them.)

    They had the following children:

189 ii. Dora Pauline Coburn
