            March 26 th , 1865

My dear Cousin,

My mother desires me to write to you, she feels very much for you all being bereaved of your dear Father and Mother both in one year, but we must all submit to the will of the Almighty, my mother reflects so much of herself not writing to your mother after your Father's death.   I do assure you it was not that she did not think about it but she never could ___ a resolution.

Uncle James received a letter from our Uncle Thomas lately and he has not wrote for about 13 years before.   My mother was at Morpeth on Wednesday last he went to see her cousin John Appleby, he has been ill a month he has a very bad knee and confined to bed.   My mother saw her Brother Jonathan and wife & children, they have four, Thos, Sarah, Mary Ann & Jane they are all at school, he has a Farm and doing very well.   Uncle James & his wife are both well they have 2 children Frances Jane & William.   Aunt Ann is in a situation at Morpeth she is looking very well, & Aunt Jane's Husband is a Gardner he is very delicate.   She has tow, Jane & George.   Jane is serving her time to be a dressmaker and George is at school.   They have tow cows and a horse, it is about half a year since we saw Aunt Frances and her Family.   Her husband is a shoemaker and has a shoe shop, they have 2 children Barkas (?) & Mary Darling, they are both at school yet.   I wrote to her and informed her of your dear mothers death, she felt very sory but she said she left no little ones her family were all grown up which would be a great consolation to her and she would died with her family around her.   She lives at Jarrow near Newcastle on Tyne.   We live in a house all alone by ourselves about a mile from Blyth.   My father manages a small farm for a gentleman in Blyth.   My brother served six years apprenticeship to be a butcher, he has been three years a Journeyman and now is about commencing Business on her own account, his name is Thomas he is 22 years of age and I am nearly three years older.   I have always been at home we are very comfortable.   My Father & Mother are both very well.   Mother was 60 years on the 3 rd of March you would not say she was 50 to see her.

Dear cousin we are all pleased about your Brother James naming his little girl after my mother, our Great Aunt Martha is still alive that is our mother's aunt, she is very old but is quite well.   My dear cousin I think my stock of news is nearly exausted and I hope you will favour me with a letter soon.   We all join in with our kindest love to all your Brothers & Sisters and their Familys & may the Gracious God who has thought proper to bereave you, continues to support you under this and every other trial till you arrive at last in that Kingdom, where the wicked ceace from troubling, and where the weary finds rest, is the sincere prayer of your loving cousin,

                    Sarah Reed

excuse my imperfection.

Dear nephew accept this letter from your cousin with your Uncles and Aunts Blessing,

                  Martha Reed
