Whitehall, and the Cheviot
Whitehall is on College Burn upstream from Kirknewton.
When the earliest known Herbert ancestor Thomas Herbert married Christian Crozer,
he was recorded as ‘of Kirknewton’. He was probably living and working at Whitehall.
His son Robert (1768) was probably born there and his elder children too, including Thomas (1796).

Wooler, West Chapel
This meeting house was established to supplement the Cheviot Street Church.
Thomas Craigs of Milfield was an elder here for 30 years until he emigrated to Canada.
He seldom missed a Sunday despite the long journey on foot.
The building is adjacent to the library. It served some time as a Masonic Lodge but is now in private use.
