Transcription of Letter No. 1, written after the deaths of both Robert Wilson, who died 25 Jan 1864, and his wife Mary Brown, who died 12 Dec 1864, to their son Alexander Wilson by Mary Brown's brother James Brown. Spelling kept as near to the original as possible. ( /jsh ). Scan of four page letter and envelope is found below.

My Dear Nephew
I ware sorry to hear from you, and all of us as sone as I could go that night I went to my Brothers Jonathan and your Aunts at Morpeth and I wrote to your other Aunts at Blyth. It has put us all a boute. It are just like the briken up of our femley. Your Unkle Jonathan wishes to know if you wrote to your Unkle Thomas that your Mother ware ill or if he has been sean you for I find he will not write to me. I wrote to him tow months a go. It are a boute thorteen years since I had a letter from him when I ware travlen with my Master for what reason he will not write me I know not.
There has been no snow heare this winter till this last day or tow & It are a slite covren and it are like to lye as it are drye. We are bisey gitten oute the manure for the Turnips this has been a bad year for them mine ware a faler. The wheat are not so bad a crop but the oats ware a very light crop. I had a good crop of Hay all in well. We have four cows and tow comen in this Summer for cows & other twenty young ones for sale as they are ready.
Make our kynde love to all our relatives and say to them that we will be happy to hear from them. I do miss your Father writin to me as he gave me the count of you all. Your Brother Robert are you and him & James Jon all to gither and how far are Thomas & Elizabeth & Jane of you. I will be happy if I could done aney thing in my poor ( power ?) for aney of you. I sent you a London paper I will send you a Morpeth one sone let me know the name of the places where your Sisters lives trustin they will write sone Jane has for gote me since she got married.
I have not hear from Blyth since I wrot them but Thos Reed ware up at the New yeare and thay ware all well but trustin to here from Sarah soon. Your Unkle Jonathan kind love to you all he had the Travlen Threasher that goes with steam on Tuesday. It takes a boute a dosen to keep all goen we have both a Thresher on the Farm our one ( own ?) but it are a Friend has three Travlers so we sometimes have a day of them. Now I most finish and trust to here from you as I feel for you all so fare from me.
