Distribution of the surname James in the United Kingdom in 1881 and 1998. In 1881, 31 years after Richard James had departed the highest concentration of people with the James surname were almost exclusively concentrated in Swansea Wales with most others spread through southwestern England, lending some credence to his 1881 census claim that he was born in Wales.
