28. Harry William Gass . Son of Thomas "Marshall" Gass & Elizabeth "Lizzie" Brown. Born 18 Jul 1894 in York Mills, NB. Died 31 May 1980 in MacLean Memorial Hospital, McAdam. Buried in Rockland Cemetery, McAdam. Occupation CPR Employee. Religion United Church Of Canada.

    Gass - Vance:   At the Manse, St Stephen May 11, by Rev. W. W. Malcolm, William Henry Gass of McAdam and Femaline Almire Vance of Prince William, NB.

 

      From The Daily Gleaner, 20 Jun 1980:

    Harry W. Gass

    Funeral services were held at St. Paul's United Church for Harry William Gass, 85, of McAdam.   Rev. Orville James and Rev. Robert Barry conducted the services.

 

    Born in York Mills, he moved later to McAdam where he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway for 44 years before retiring in 1959.   He was a veteran of the First World War.   He served as chief assessor for the village for 20 years as well as being a member of the school board for 12 years.   Mr Gass was a past president of the Canadian Legion and an elder in the United Church.   He had received his 50-year pin from the International Association of Machinists.

 

    He is survived by his wife, Alma (Vance); three sons, Wallace, Elwood and Hollie all of McAdam; a daughter, Bernice of McAdam; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Ward of McAdam and Oswald of Saint John; two sisters, Hazel of York Mills and Emma of Kentville, NS.

 

    He married Femaline Almira "Alma" Vance, daughter of Robert Vance & Letitia "Lettie" Gartley, 11 May 1921 in St Stephen. Born 21 Jul 1894 in Magaguadavic. Died 18 Dec 1989 in MacLean Memorial Hospital, McAdam. Buried in Rockland Cemetery, McAdam.

 

    They lived in McAdam, and had four children:   Elwood, Wallace, Hollie and Bernice.

 

    From The Daily Gleaner, 11 Jan 1990:

    Femaline A. Gass

    The funeral of Femaline A. (Alma) Gass, 95, was held at St. Paul's United Church in McAdam.   She was the widow of Harry Gass.   Born in Magaguadavic, daughter of the late Robert and Letitia (Gartley) Vance, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

 

    She was predeceased by one son Elwood and survived by two sons Wallace and Hollie, both of McAdam and one daughter Bernice, also of McAdam.

 

    She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #7 and had recently received her 60 year pin.

 

    Interment will be at a later date.   Pallbearers were Randford and Lawrence Gass, William Gass, Allison Gass, Gordon Gass and David Walton.

 

    They had the following children:

  83   ii.   Elwood Malcolm "Barney" Gass

  84   iii.   Bernice Elizabeth Gass

  85   iv.   Hollie Vance Gass
