and Isabella Embleton (1804 - 16 Feb 1892)

1. Thomas Herbert . Son of Robert Herbert & Isabella Wanless. Born about 1798 in 'Whitehall' on College Burn, a stream that flows north from The Cheviot.   'Whitehall' is in Kirknewton Parish, Northumberland, England. Died 24 Feb 1862 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer.

    Marriage:   1824.   Ilderton Parish Bishops Transcripts:   Thomas Herbert, Biddlestone of the Parish of Allenton a batchelor and Isabella Embleton of the Haugh-Head of this parish, spinster, by Banns June 11.   Witnesses:   George Embleton, Elizabeth Reed, George Herbert.  

    (Allenton was old name of Alwinton.)   (The marriage information from Ewen Herbert of Victoria, Australia, who did research in England.)

    Thomas Herbert, his wife Isabella Embleton, and their children Margaret, age 12, Isabella, age 10, Robert, age 8, Mary, age 3, and Christina, age 1 year; together with Isabella's sisters Eleanor and Elizabeth Embleton, and brother Robert Embleton; and brother William Embleton and his wife Jane and two young sons George and James Embleton came to New Brunswick on the brig Cornelius of Sunderland in 1837.   They were among the first settlers of Harvey Settlement.   Thomas's occupation on arrival in NB was listed as Miller.

    Thomas first got Land Grant Lot #7W, first Tract, Harvey Settlement, 100 acres, and later added other property to his holdings. The original grant was very near the present Village of Harvey and across the road from the present Harvey High School (where Maurice Lister lived). The 1861 Census shows that the Herberts had 300 acres of land--75 improved and 225 unimproved.   Cash value of farm was 200 pounds, and value of implements and machinery was 15 pounds.   They had 3 horses, 3 milch cows, 2 working oxen, 4 other neat cattle, 12 sheep, 2 swine, and slaughtered 350 lb. pork.   They produced 150 lb. butter, 90 lb. cheese, 55 lb. wool, 15 ton hay, 15 bu. wheat, 300 bu. oats, 30 bu. buckwheat, 6 bu. peas, 5 bu. timothy, 12 bu. turnips and 80 bu. potatoes.

    Daughter Christina, age 1 year, is included in a listing of the family after they arrived in NB, but the 1851 Census does not list her (she would have been about 15 years old), so perhaps she died soon after their arrival in NB or sometime prior to 1851.   (No record of her death.)

        Copied from article about Haugh Head, Wooler in local Berwick newspaper (contained in letter to Ewen Herbert, Australia, from Eric Herbert, Berwick-upon-Tweed, 9 Mar 2002): ".....Life in 1837 must have been hard.   In this year William Embleton, who ran a joiner's shop at Haugh Head decided to risk crossing the North Atlantic with his young family to settle in Canada.   Along with his brother-in-law Thomas Herbert from Coldgate Mill they joined the sailing ship 'Cornelius' at Berwick and with a group of other emigrants from Glendale and Tweedside made the hazardous crossing to New Brunswick, where their descendents still live, in a district named by them Tweedside."

    He married Isabel Embleton, daughter of George Embleton & Margaret Davidson, 11 Jun 1824 in Haughhead (Parish Of Ilderton). Born 1804 in Branton, England. Christen 25 Jul 1804 in Branton Presbyterian. Died 16 Feb 1892 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.    (Believed to be buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery, but her name is not on gravestone.)
