228. Cora Levina Haslett. Daughter of James Hazlett & Angelina "Gelena" Little. Born 31 Oct 1884 in Harvey Station. Died 20 Nov 1961 in Harvey Community Hospital. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

    After Cora's mother died, Cora lived with her grandmother Isabella (1891 Census).  After her grandmother's death, she lived with her uncles, Charles and Albert.

    Mrs C. L. Briggs Widely Mourned

    Harvey Station -- The death of Mrs Cora L. Briggs, widow of Matthew Briggs, occurred at the Harvey Community Hospital Monday evening.

    She had been a life-long and highly respected resident of Harvey Station.  She took ill Saturday.

    Mrs Briggs was a member of the United Church of Canada; the Order of the Eastern Star, Harvey branch; and the Woman's Missionary Society of her church.

    Surviving are a daughter, Mrs Vercelia Leighton of Windsor, Ont., a grandson, Paul M. Briggs of Nashwaaksis, and two great grandchildren.

    The body will rest at the home of Lorne Coffey, Harvey Station, from this afternoon until noon Thursday when it will be taken to the United Church of Canada, where funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm with Rev W. L. Randall officiating.

    Interment will be in the Harvey Cemetery.

 

    She married James Matheson "Matthew" Briggs (link to Briggs family pages), son of Thomas Brigg (link to Briggs family pages) & Sarah Jane "Janie" Swan (link to Swan family pages), 21 Aug 1901 in York Co., NB. Born 18 Aug 1879 in Manners Sutton. Died 16 Nov 1935 in York Mills, NB. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Partner In Briggs & Little Woolen Mill, York Mills, NB.

   Estate Admitted For Probate

    On Saturday in the York County Probate Court before Judge of Probate J. B. Dickson, the estate of the late Councillor Matthew Briggs, of Manners Sutton was admitted for probate.  The estate was valued at $12,000 mostly made up of interest in the York woollen mills and life insurance.  It is divided between the widow and children.  Mrs Briggs and a son were the executors named in the will.

    Coun. J. M. Briggs Died on Saturday

    Prominent Business Man of Harvey--Member of Municipal Council.

    (Special Despatch to The Daily Gleaner)

    Harvey Station, Nov 18 -- Word of the sudden passing on Saturday afternoon, of Councillor J. Matthew Briggs caused a general expression of regret.  Mr Briggs had not been well for the past two years but until Friday he was able to attend to his business when he was stricken with a severe attack which resulted in his death on Saturday.

    The late Mr Briggs was born in Manners Sutton, August 18th 1879.  He was employed with the C.P.R. at McAdam for a time and following was the manager of the Farmers Trading Company, Ltd., Coburn, for a period of seven years.  Since 1916 he and his partner Howard M. Little, have owned and operated the Briggs & Little Woolen Mills, York Mills.  The esteem in which he was held in this parish was demonstrated when he was elected a Councillor for Manners Sutton by acclamation in 1933.  He was a highly respected and honored citizen, well known for his fairness, sound judgment and business ability, a keen sportsman and much interested in all activities for the betterment of the community.  He will be deeply mourned by all who came under the influence of his true Christian life.

    Surviving are his wife, formerly Miss Cora L. Little, one son, Russell, of the firm of Briggs & Little, two daughters, Mrs Charles Leighton, Windsor, Ont., and Miss Margaret, R.N., at home, two sisters, Mrs LeBaron Little, York Mills, Mrs Harry T. Swan, Harvey Station, and one brother, Charles Briggs, Manners Sutton.

    The funeral was held from the home this afternoon at 2.30 pm.  Interment in the Harvey Cemetery.

 

    They had the following children:
