52. Jane "Janie" Little. Daughter of David Little & Margaret Ann Herbert (link to Herbert family pages). Born 12 Sep 1850 in Harvey. Christen 12 Oct 1850 in St. Paul's Church Records, Fredericton. Died 20 Oct 1944 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Merchant, General Store.

From The Daily Telegraph, 10 Jul 1869:  Jane, second daughter of David Little, and William W. E. Smith, Merchant, were married 5 July 1869 at the residence of the bride's father, by Rev Samuel Johnson.

Witnesses to marriage were John Little and Isabella Little.

    From newspaper obituary - 1944:

Mrs W. W. E. Smith Dies in Harvey Station

The death occurred last night at her home here of Mrs W. W. E. Smith, one of the oldest and best loved people in this section of York County, at the age of 94 years.

Mrs Smith was born in Harvey Station, a daughter of the late David Little and Margaret Herbert and for 75 years conducted a general store here and was well known all through the district for her honesty and integrity and fair dealing with the public.  She was an ardent member of St. Andrews United Church, active in all its work until age prevented her taking part.  For the past five years she had made her home with her granddaughter, Mrs C. Arthur Smith.  She was a life member of the W.M.S., a charter member of the W.A. and Red Cross and since the outbreak of the present war she had knit 100 pairs of socks in addition to much other work.  She was a gracious lady, one whose companionship was sought by old and young alike and her death will occasion sincere sorrow.  She is survived by a son, Louis Smith in Hillcrest, Alberta.  Five daughters and two sons predeceased her.  There are eight grandchildren including Donald Smith, M.B.E., Dartmouth, N.S. who will be here for the funeral tomorrow.

The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon from her late home with service at St. Andrews Church at 2:30 o'clock and interment in Harvey Cemetery.

She married William Walter Embleton Smith (link to Embleton family pages), son of Joseph Smith (link to Embleton family pages) & Mary Embleton (link to Embleton family pages), 5 Jul 1869 in Harvey, York Co., NB By Rev. Samuel Johnson. Born 20 Apr 1839 in Alnick, Eng. Died 8 Feb 1886 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Merchant, General Store.

William was born in England, and came to New Brunswick as a young man.  He was a nephew of the Embletons who came to NB with the first settlers of Harvey.  William's parents and siblings stayed in England.

William and Janie opened a general store in the village of Harvey shortly after they were married, which Janie continued to operate after the death of her husband, and the store was passed down through the generations to her granddaughter Margaret and Arthur Smith, who sold it upon their retirement.  The store has retained its original name, W.W.E.Smith, and is still in operation.

For further information on this family, see page 134 of "The Little Family of Harvey Settlement".

Probable wedding day photograph (30 Jun 1909) of Annie Elizabeth Smith (front and center; b. 20 Jun 1881, d. 13 Jun 1934 of pneumonia at her home in Westbrook, Maine). Married Rev. Roderick Augustus MacDonald. Had two children. (Source: Judy Davis, 31 Mar 2007).

Other subjects in photograph are unknown. However, as this is a wedding party photograph it probably includes some of her siblings and the older lady in the dark dress is probably her mother Jane (Janie) Little.

Excerpt from newspaper item, 15 Jul 1937:

    W. W. E. Smith

1869 - In this year the firm of W. W. E. Smith, general merchants, came into being.  The store in the valley near the station was opened by Mr and Mrs Smith shortly after their marriage in that year.  Since then it has carried on a continuous business, supplying the needs of the community in the line of general supplies.  Groceries, clothing, hardware, and all of the other lines of material usually found in a general store were handled.

On the death of her husband, Mrs Smith carried on the business.  Today, at the age of 87, the nearest living descendant of the original colonists, she is still active in her establishment supervising the work.

    They had the following children:

164 i. Joseph "Lewis" Smith

165 ii. Margaret Isabel Smith

166 iii. Mary "Alice" Smith

167 iv. (Infant Son) Smith

168 v. Emma Jane Smith

169 vi. David Andrew Smith

170 vii. Nellie Graham Smith

171 viii. Annie Elizabeth Smith

172 ix. William "Norman" Smith
