254. Jane Elizabeth "Jennie" McGowan. Daughter of William McGowan & Bertha Jane McAllen. Born 19 Dec 1907 in Tweedside. Died 28 Feb 1937 in Tweedside. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery.

    Died of infection shortly after birth of her only child.

    Death of Mrs Harry Saunders Mourned by Community

    Interment at Manners Sutton.

    Harvey, NB, March 13 -- The death of Jennie, wife of Harry Saunders occurred at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs William McGowan, Tweedside, on Feb. 27th, after an illness of one month.

    Deceased who was 29 years of age, had spent her life at home.  She was well known and highly regarded by a large circle of friends.  She was a member of the W.M.S. of Tweedside and its secretary at the time of her death, also a member of the choir.  Possessed of great musical ability she gave freely of her time and talent in every good cause.

    She is survived by her husband, parents and infant son, two sisters, Mrs Ward Logan and Mrs John Black, and one brother, Bernard McAllan of Dumbarton.

    The funeral was held on March 1.  A short service was held at the home with Scripture reading and prayer by Rev. R. J. Kirkland, and a hymn,  There is a Green Hill Far Away, sung by Miss Florence Coburn, Mrs Edgar Coburn and Mr Kirkland.  An impressive service was held in Knox Presbyterian Church with Mr Kirkland taking as his text, "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil."  The choir rendered the hymns, O God Our Help in Ages Past, There is No Night in Heaven, and Asleep in Jesus.

    The pallbearers were Earle Swan, Edison Messer, Donald Swan, Ward Logan, William Craig and Lewis Swan.  Interment was made in the cemetery at Manners Sutton, with prayers at the grave by Mr Kirkland.  Among the beautiful floral tributes was a wreath from Tweedside Auxiliary of the W.M.S.

 

(Note:  One newspaper obituary gave death date as February 27, while another gave death date as February 28.)

 

    She married Harry Ronald Saunders, son of Edward Saunders & Martha Lois Sharpe, 26 Oct 1935 in Knox Presby. Church Records, Harvey. Born 11 Aug 1908 in Lower Wakefield, Carleton Co., NB. Died 21 Aug 1985 in Harvey Community Hospital. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation CPRail Carman.

   Harry's first wife was Jane Elizabeth "Jennie" McGowan, and after Jennie;s death, Harry married Verna Hickey.

    Harry R. Saunders

    Harry R. Saunders of Tweedside, Harvey Station, died Wednesday at the Harvey Community Hospital.  He was 77.  Born at Lower Wakefield, Carleton County, he was the son of Edward and Martha (Sharpe) Saunders.  He was a retired CP Rail carman.

    He is survived by his wife, Verna (Hickey) Saunders; seven sons, Ronald, Emerson, Curtis, Victor and Chris, all of Harvey Station and Darcy and Owen of Toronto; four daughters, Mrs Lester Fraser (Uta) of Fredericton; Mrs Roy Bird (Dorothy) and Mrs Stuart Swan (Brenda) both of Harvey Station and Mrs Clyde Townes (Harriet) of McAdam; two brothers, Russell Saunders of Woodstock and William Saunders of Edmonton, Alta.; two sisters, Mrs Len Hayward (Edith) and Mrs Jason Miller (Annie), both of Woodstock; 25 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

    The body is resting at Swan's Funeral Home, Harvey Station.  Prayers for the family will be held on Saturday at 2 pm.  The funeral service will follow at 2:30 pm at the Knox Presbyterian Church, Rev. David Dewar officiating.  Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

    Pallbearers will be Doug Fraser, David Bird, Dale Saunders, Glen Saunders, Jeff Saunders and Keith Little.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Fund or a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
